The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621
to give thanks for a bountiful harvest.
The meal was shared between the Pilgrims
and Native Americans with foods whose
origin was North American
such as pumpkin, cranberries, corn and of course,
the native bird known as the wild turkey.
The Pilgrim's harvest would not have been
so plentiful were it not for the Native
Americans who taught them what would grow
well in their new land.
Today the tradition of a Thanksgiving turkey
still exists and, although a good harvest
is not the purpose of the celebration,
it is still a time to give thanks for
one's blessings, whatever they may be.
Having You in my life
is what I am thankful for today
and every day.
You are my blessing.
